EV Tires: Why They Wear Faster
Short answer: expect roughly 20–30% less tread life than the same tire on a comparable petrol car. It’s weight plus instant torque, not a defect and not something a shop can fix. Rotating every 8,000–10,000 km and keeping pressures right buys most of it back.
Where It Comes From
- Weight. A battery pack adds several hundred kilograms. More mass on the same contact patch means more force scrubbing rubber off the road every time you turn or stop.
- Torque from zero. A combustion engine builds up to its peak. An electric motor delivers everything the instant you touch the pedal, and tires pay for that at every green light.
- Regenerative braking. It puts deceleration through the driven axle rather than through the brakes, which concentrates wear where the motor is.
- Quiet cabin. Less obvious, but real — you don’t hear a tire starting to howl in an EV until it’s well down the road.
Three Habits That Actually Help
- Rotate every 8,000–10,000 km. More often than you did on a petrol car. This is the single biggest lever.

Choosing Tires for an EV
You don’t strictly need an EV-marked tire, but you do need the correct load index for the vehicle’s weight and the right speed rating. EV-specific tires typically add reinforced construction, lower rolling resistance and foam inside the carcass to cut road noise. They cost more and they’re usually worth it, because a cheap tire with the wrong load index on a two-tonne car wears out fast and rides badly.

One Safety Note
An EV must be lifted on its designated jacking points. Lifting on the battery pack rail damages a component that costs more than the car’s tires many times over. If a shop doesn’t have Tesla pucks or the correct pads for your model, that’s a reason to go elsewhere — we do.
